If you have ever felt unsure how to pray, you are in good company. The disciples asked Jesus the very same thing: “Lord, teach us to pray.” Prayer is simply talking with God — honestly, humbly and often.
You do not need special words. You need a willing heart. Here is a gentle pattern to begin.
A simple pattern to follow
- ✦Adoration — begin by praising God for who He is.
- ✦Confession — be honest about where you have fallen short, and receive His forgiveness.
- ✦Thanksgiving — thank Him for what He has done and given.
- ✦Supplication — bring your needs, and the needs of others, before Him.
Keep it real
God is not impressed by long or fancy prayers. Speak to Him the way you would speak to someone who deeply loves you. Tell Him your fears, your hopes and your questions.
Prayer is a two-way relationship. Leave space to be still and listen, and let His word shape what you ask for.
Make it a rhythm
Start small — even five honest minutes a day. Choose a time and place, and return to it. Consistency matters more than length.
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
Matthew 6:9
A prayer to pray
Father, thank You that I can come to You just as I am. Teach me to pray. Help me to know Your voice and to trust Your heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
