Praying Scripture

When you don’t know what to pray, pray the Bible back to God.

Praying Scripture means taking God’s own words and speaking them back to Him. It anchors your prayers in truth and gives you words when your own run out.

It is one of the most powerful and peaceful ways to pray.

How to do it

  • Choose a passage — a psalm is a wonderful place to start.
  • Read it slowly, out loud if you can.
  • Turn each line into a prayer — praise, request or thanks.
  • Personalize it: insert your name or the names of those you love.

An example

Psalm 23 becomes: “Lord, You are my shepherd — I trust You to provide. Lead me beside still waters and restore my soul. Even in the valley, I will not fear, for You are with me.”

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:105

A prayer to pray

Lord, let Your word dwell in me richly. As I pray Your promises, align my heart with Your will and fill me with Your peace. Amen.
